With these words here, you will be able to point things/place/locations in Japanese. There usually a confusion in how to pick which pronouns to use. Actually there are a pattern in term of Japanese pronouns for things/place/locations. Depending on the usage, they start with KO, SO, A and DO syllable. After reading this post, we guarantee you won’t be confused anymore! Let’s start learning all about Japanese object/place pronouns!

こ, そ, あ and ど

…………………………………………

: Pointing something near the speaker

…………………………………………

: Point something near the listener

…………………………………………

: Point something far from both speaker/listener

…………………………………………

: To ask information

…………………………………………

And here are the lists of all common pronouns:

…………………………………………

Object/Thing :

これ | それ | あれ | どれ
この [object] | その [object] | あの [object] | どの [object]

We use these pronouns to point/locate object/noun.

これ VS この [noun] Usually there are confusion as to how they are both different. It’s easy if you see this sample below.

As you can see, これ just means ‘this’. While この cannot stand alone. It needs to be attached to the object. In this case it’s この[テレビ], which means ‘This television’.

…………………………………………

Place:

ここ | そこ | あそこ | どこ

Place/Direction:

こちら | そちら | あちら | どちら
こっち | そっち | あっち | どっち (Less formal)

We use these pronouns for locations/place/directions.

…………………………………………

ここ VS こちら

ここ means “Here/This place/This location.” While こちら is more toward “This way/This direction/Over here/This place here/This location here”. It’s showing the direction of the place. Below is the example of usage using あそこ and あちら.

About ど

The ど version is not being reviewed here since it’s a part of questions words. Questions words is more complex in usage. Check it out in the “Particle か and all about questions” page. *coming very soon*
